Event showcases how the food industry can unlock greater profits and increase product appeal through skin packaging

Sealed Air has advised key players in the European food industry that skin packaging can offer shelf differentiation, provide cost savings and increase their sustainability credentials.

Over 100 delegates from beef, pork, fish and cheese processors and retailers attended ‘Skin My Pack’ at Sealed Air’s Packforum® facility in Paris. The event was hosted in partnership with G.Mondini S.p.A and Ulma.

Sealed Air shared insights with attendees on how companies can address food waste and food loss challenges, meet European Union-set targets, improve appeal and convenience and extend shelf life.

In response to rising food and packaging waste pressures and related costs, the market is rapidly moving from modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) to skin packaging (usage now stands at 30 to 40 percent of the UK market2).  Key benefits of switching include cost savings with zero scrap and less material used.

“The food industry is facing rising European Union waste packaging targets moving to 75 percent by 20301 and there are growing commercial pressures to increase profitability and convenience, keep food fresher for longer and be more sustainable. Skin packaging can impact all of these desired outcomes across the supply chain,” said Ed Roberts, regional sustainability director Europe, Middle East and Africa, Sealed Air Food Care.

One such vacuum skin solution, the award winning Sealed Air’s Cryovac® Darfresh® on Tray, improves retail shrink rates by extending shelf life in comparison to tray lidding systems. Smoked and processed meats last twice as long on the shelf (up to two months); fresh red meat without a bone increases from 12 days to 30 days; and fresh fish rises from eight days to 10 days.

Processors and retailers were also informed that Cryovac Darfresh on Tray is sustainably attractive, with up to 15 percent less carbon dioxide emissions as compared to tray skin packaging solutions.

Other stand out advantages of skin packaging include pack differentiation on retail shelves with vertical display, greater pack transparency and leak prevention before opening, and greater personalisation, allowing retailers to meet the growing demands of consumers.

Along with other processors at the event, Bodin – a French poultry processor – presented its success story with, which significantly improved its point-of-sale competitiveness and helped drive profitability in its production process.

“Food waste and food loss, sustainability and convenience are all becoming increasingly crucial to commercial success. Skin packaging, particularly Cryovac Darfresh on Tray, ensures increased appeal and higher profits for processors and retailers,” added Ed Roberts.

Sealed Air also celebrated Cryovac Darfresh on Tray being selected as an Award Winner for Packaging Excellence at the WorldStar Awards 2017 at the event.
